Are you seeking security or adventure?

I believe that throughout our lives we seek both excitement and stability. Yet, as with many things, we can’t have it all at once. That’s why it’s so important to keep balance at every stage, and to truly savor the moment.

Depending on where we are in life, we have a varying combination of:

  • Energy
  • Time
  • Purchasing Power

Early adulthood (20s to 30s):
We’re full of energy. We have plenty of time. Yet, we have very little financial power—neither credit nor liquidity. In this phase, we crave adventure and thrills, often making impulsive choices that can put our safety at risk. Some decisions carry consequences that last a lifetime. But undeniably, the most memorable adventures often happen in these years. What we live during this chapter—whether good or bad—can never be repeated. It’s a time to soak up every moment and avoid making foolish choices.

Mid-adulthood (30s to 60s):
We now have energy and purchasing power. This means credit but not necessarily liquidity. Yet we’re short on time. This is when we devote ourselves to professional growth, running on the hamster wheel for about four decades. Life becomes more stable, with fewer adventures. Our choices focus on family well-being and long-term security. Still, we occasionally long for the excitement we once had in our 20s. Sometimes we plan a trip or break the routine, only to miss the comfort and tranquility of home.

Late adulthood (60s and beyond):
Retirement arrives. We now have time and financial stability. We have both credit and liquidity. Still, we lack the energy. Sometimes, it’s not even enough to get out of bed. The kids have grown and moved out. The house feels enormous with just the two of us. We have all the time in the world. A pension provides financial independence. Yet, we miss the wild days of youth. We also miss the rhythm of a career that shaped our lives for 40 years. Life feels safe, yet a visit to the mall with our grandchildren feels like a grand adventure. This is the time to find joy in new hobbies, learning, volunteering, and of course, rekindling romance with our partner.

In the end, we can’t have everything. But at each stage, we can learn to cherish the moment. We should make decisions guided by wisdom rather than emotions. We must recognize that each day is an adventure worth living.
