Create an emergency preparedness plan.

Let’s be honest—no one is ever 100% prepared for emergencies.

It’s simply impossible to predict when or how the next one will strike. While it’s true we shouldn’t be completely indifferent, we also shouldn’t become obsessively paranoid.

There are many ways to stay prepared, and here are the ones that come to mind—not necessarily in order of importance:

  1. Clothes and sturdy shoes always within reach (ideally suited for construction or outdoor weather).
  2. A whistle and a pocketknife close at hand.
  3. A clear, easily accessible exit route (leading to the street or higher ground).
  4. Have a personal backpack at home. Keep one in the car or at the office as well. It should contain glasses, medications, clothes, and enough water for one day.
  5. Candles, matches, batteries, and flashlights at home and at work.
  6. Non-perishable food and enough water for several days, in case of power outages—both at home and at work.
  7. A fully stocked first aid kit at home and in the office.
  8. A tent and rope at home.
  9. A clearly defined family or coworkers meeting point.
  10. A working shortwave radio with batteries.

Of course, there are many more recommendations—but the most important one of all is:

“Stay calm. Take care of yourself first, so you can help others afterward.”
