What TV shows did you watch as a kid?
In my childhood during the 1980s, most households had only broadcast television channels. Cable TV was a rarity, something that wouldn’t become widespread until the 1990s. Living rooms and bedrooms were home to large, heavy televisions with manual dials. Black-and-white sets were still around, and a few lucky homes had color TVs.
Back then, the children’s shows that dominated broadcast TV were mostly from the 1960s and 70s. These included Hanna-Barbera classics and Japanese anime. You couldn’t go a day without seeing Warner Bros. cartoons like Looney Tunes, or MGM’s Tom and Jerry. And of course, in Latin America, El Chavo del Ocho and El ChapulĂn Colorado were staples of every childhood.
Here’s a list of what I remember:
| Show Title | Origin / Genre |
| The Flintstones | Hanna-Barbera |
| Mazinger Z | Japanese Manga & Anime |
| Looney Tunes | Warner Bros. |
| Speed Racer | Japanese Anime |
| Tom and Jerry | Hanna-Barbera / MGM |
| Heidi | Japanese Anime |
| The Smurfs | Belgian Comic |
| Scooby-Doo | Hanna-Barbera |
| Masters of the Universe | Mattel Comic / Animated Series |
| El Chavo & El ChapulĂn | Mexican Live-Action Series |
