How do you manage screen time for yourself?

There are 24/7 professions. They don’t follow office hours and must be available at all times, in all places. Doctors, nurses, police officers, and firefighters are clear examples of such vocations. Those who pursue these paths know they’ll be called upon at unusual hours. Their spouses and families make many sacrifices to understand these demands. In many cases, they lead to painful separations.

The world of IT carries a special banner among these professions.

My job requires me to always have a computer or phone with internet access within reach. My screen time is high during an intense workweek.
How do I manage that time? I don’t—because it’s impossible. I try to keep my devices nearby, but not glued to me all day. I’m online, but I don’t have the device in my hand or strapped to my ear all day long.

I take it easy in the evenings. I spend weekends with my family. I carve out time for personal things. I make an effort to leave the city whenever I can. I reconnect with nature. I know I must stay just one call away from the rest of the world. Off course, this availability has to be rewarded appropriately.

It’s the profession I chose—and it’s what I love to do.
