How have your political views changed over time?

As a rule of life, I avoid giving opinions on politics, religion, or sports. I do so unless someone asks me directly. These are topics that often generate fanaticism. It is rare to find two people who fully agree on any of them.

But, I will answer today’s question by saying that my political stance has changed very little over the years. I am not writing these lines to convince anyone. Instead, I want to clarify where I stand and how I understand society.

I define myself as a center-right person. I believe that capital and the market are the most important elements in a society. This holds true as long as the social focus is not lost. I believe in the strength of the market as a driver of progress. Nonetheless, I also believe progress should translate into well-being for families. It should not lead to stark social differences where the middle class disappears.

I believe in a Government that manages and delegates. I do not believe in a Government that tries to do everything. That leads to doing nothing well. I believe in a Government that regulates, guarantees, and supervises, but not one that attempts to cover everything. I believe in a Government that facilitates the work of entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, it should not try to become one itself. Worse yet, it should not be the only choice. I believe in a Government that generates jobs, health, and education by encouraging private enterprise and small businesses. At the same time, it regulates, monitors, and oversees.

I believe in a Government that ensures the fruits of progress go to the people. They should not just go into the pockets of a few. I believe in a Government that supports the entrepreneur who creates jobs. It encourages the one who gets up every morning to produce and work honestly. At the same time, I believe in a Government that is strict with the corrupt. It is also firm with the unproductive, the criminal, and the delinquent.

I do not seek to impose a vision. Instead, I aim to open a space for conversation. This conversation is about how to balance economic freedom with social responsibility.
