How are you creative?

When you choose a profession where creativity must be constant, the motivation is often economic. Otherwise, there’s no bread on the table. I have to write that new book, compose that new song, or paint that new picture. If I don’t, my family doesn’t eat, and I have to dedicate myself to something else. I admire people who, driven solely by financial motivation, find that spark of inspiration to create great works from scratch.

Still, for the rest of us who enjoy creative activities, it’s all about passion or simply a hobby. Money isn’t an issue for us. Our profession already covers that part. In these cases, it’s harder to find that creative vein, which usually appears only during emotional peaks.

In my case, either great joy awakens that creative moment in me. Deep sadness or sometimes intense anger also tends to drive it. I have realized something from the time I practiced music to now. When I write more often, I notice that creative inspiration doesn’t arrive if my emotions are under control. This has both advantages and disadvantages. My emotions don’t influence my decisions. Yet, my guitar or my keyboard are getting dusty.

We all go through emotional crises, some stronger than others. The important thing is to channel those emotions into an activity that allows us to create. Many great masterpieces have been born that way.
