What makes you feel nostalgic?

Nostalgia is tied to the past. One of the worst things we can do to harm our mental health is to live constantly in the past. Yet, there are moments when it is inevitable to remember beautiful times or to regret things that never happened.

What makes me feel most nostalgic is remembering my children. It reminds me of when I had to tell them about their parents’ divorce. Even though I believe it was the right decision at the time, it still saddens me. I think of them and the fact that I had to separate from them as they were entering adolescence. This was the most important stage of their growth.

It has now been 10 years, and my children are adults. I have an excellent relationship with them. Over these past 10 years, we have tried to stay united and have shared many experiences together. I love them, and I know they love me. Yet, the nostalgia of not being with them during their adolescence is intense. It’s the hardest part of my past to carry.

But that is behind us now, and I don’t know what the future holds for me and my children. Depression is the companion of the past. Anxiety is the companion of the future. Hence, worrying about what will come is not advisable. What matters is to live the moment with intensity and love.

Enjoy every moment as if it were the last.
