What strategies do you use to cope with negative feelings?

Our emotions are the engine that moves us along the path we’ve chosen. Without our feelings, we’re simply a supercomputer doing everything according to a program. Our emotions and feelings are magical. They carry us to the places we set out to reach. They do so even when everything seemed impossible or no one believed we would make it. On the other hand, our emotions and feelings can be terrible when they run loose without control. The worst decisions are the ones made solely with emotions or feelings.

Many times our emotions emerge when we least expect them—like an earthquake or a lightning strike with no warning. When these emotions are negative, they can be just as destructive as those natural phenomena. We must learn to control them so the damage is minimal or nonexistent. Some people distance themselves to be alone; others immerse themselves in their work or their hobbies. Many say that music helps keep negative thoughts away. Others reaffirm their faith and beliefs as part of their therapy. All of these techniques, and many more, are valid and very effective. For me, what works is breathing.

I pause whenever a negative feeling tries to take over my words or my actions. I use the 5-5-5 technique. I inhale for five seconds, hold for five seconds, and exhale for five seconds. Repeat four times. It’s amazing how oxygen in our brain is enough to stop the catastrophe. It restores order within me. This simple but effective one‑minute technique helps me rein in the runaway horses.
