The genie grants you a wish. What is it?

The genie of Aladdin’s lamp has always represented humanity’s greatest paradox: the dream of having the power to obtain, solve, or create anything out of nothing, as if by magic.

Yet when we imagine possessing that power, we quickly realize there is no wish capable of satisfying human greed. The moment one desire is fulfilled, another, even greater desire emerges.

Consider a few simple and practical examples.

Someone might wish to possess all the money in the world. Before long, however, it becomes clear that such a wish is self-defeating. The moment I buy a newspaper from the corner kiosk, I no longer own all the money in the world. Technically, I have already given some of it away.

If I wished for all my health problems to disappear forever, I might live a very long life. But I would also watch my loved ones disappear one by one, eventually facing an old age marked by loneliness and sorrow.

If I wished to never lack my partner’s love, over time I would probably stop caring for that relationship. After all, if that person were destined to love me unconditionally regardless of what I did or failed to do, there would be little incentive to nurture the bond that sustains love in the first place.

Why do I bring this up?

Because it is easy to be tempted by power without considering its consequences and, above all, the responsibilities that come with it.

Power used for personal gain ultimately destroys us. Power used to help others is what truly brings comfort and meaning to our lives.

If a genie were ever to appear and grant us a wish, perhaps the best thing we could ask for would be to become a better person each day than we were yesterday.

But do we really need a genie for that?
