What are your feelings about eating meat?

As a species, we have eaten meat since the earliest stages of our evolution. Meat has been our main source of protein, an essential element for our survival. Meat was indispensable, especially when we needed strong muscles to survive in hostile natural environments. Humans have evolved. Although we no longer need to hunt or climb trees to obtain our food, our protein requirements are still significant.

I’m a 50‑year‑old adult, I weigh 75 kg, I’m 1.75 meters tall, I’m healthy, and I exercise regularly. Based on these factors, I should consume about 90 grams of protein per day. Now, 100 grams of meat contain an average of 30 grams of protein. This means that in my three daily meals, I need to eat at least 100 grams of meat. This is necessary to meet my daily need. To match that with plant‑based products, I would need 300 grams of soy for each meal. This is because soy has high protein content. Soy is one of the plant foods with the highest protein content. In other words, a steak slightly smaller than the size of my hand gives me the protein I need. It aligns with my dietary requirements. If I decide to be vegetarian, I would need to eat a large bowl of soy to meet that necessity.

It is well proven that meat—especially red meat—can cause other types of bodily disorders. These include gastrointestinal diseases or even cancer. Whether we like it or not, meat remains the main source of protein for human beings.

I believe the important thing here is to keep a balanced diet and avoid extremes. I can reduce my meat intake to 50 grams per meal. I will complement it with half a bowl of soy, cooked broccoli, chickpeas, or beans. I will also add fruit or vegetable side dishes. The key is understanding what each body needs and which foods can supply those nutrients.

Meat‑eaters and vegetarians try to reach an agreement. Meanwhile, I’ll continue enjoying 250 grams of Picanha from time to time. It will be accompanied by my favorite vegetables and a glass of Cabernet.
